How to choose sea buckthorn, label first

A practical guide to reading a sea buckthorn package: what each ingredient is doing there, the six things that disqualify a product outright, and how the formats compare. Written to be usable standing in a shop.

This guide is written so that it works against our own product as well as anyone else's. Every criterion is checkable on a package. Our label is published for exactly that reason.

The short answer

Read the ingredient list first, because ingredients are listed by weight in descending order. For a whole berry product it should be one word long. Then look for a milligram figure for vitamin C per serving, check whether the word concentrate appears, and see whether the brand names its growing regions. Three checks, thirty seconds.

Start with the ingredient list, not the claims

The front of a package is written by marketing. The ingredient list is written by regulation. Ingredients must be declared in descending order of weight, which means the list is the only part of the package that is legally obliged to tell you what you are mostly buying.

That single rule does most of the work here. If water is first, you are buying mostly water. If apple juice concentrate is second, you are buying a drink that tastes of apple. If sea buckthorn appears fourth, the picture of the orange berries on the front is decoration.

The front of the pack is an argument. The ingredient list is evidence. Read the evidence.

The six things that disqualify a product outright

These are not preferences. If any one of them is true, the product is not what the front of the package is implying it is, and you can put it down without reading further.

  1. Water or another fruit's juice is the first ingredient. Descending order by weight means the berry is a minority of what you are buying.
  2. Sugar or sweetener is present. Sea buckthorn is sharply sour. Removing that is removing the fruit's character to widen the market.
  3. Vitamin C is claimed but ascorbic acid is on the ingredient list. Synthetic ascorbic acid is not inferior in bioavailability, and Carr and Vissers found synthetic and food derived vitamin C equally bioavailable in every steady state human comparison.1 The problem is not the molecule, it is a fruit claim being carried by an added ingredient.
  4. A vitamin C multiplier is claimed with no milligram figure. "Fifteen times an orange" without a unit is unfalsifiable. Density per 100 g and content per serving are different measurements.
  5. The origin is unnamed or vague. "High altitude regions", "the Himalayas", "select growing areas". A brand that knows its supply chain names the places.
  6. The word concentrate appears and the vitamin C claim does not account for it. Producing concentrated juice cost around 50 percent of total ascorbic acid in published testing.2

What the processing words actually mean

Cold pressed, raw, unpasteurised, high pressure processed. This vocabulary is used loosely, so here is what the evidence supports rather than what the marketing implies.

Sea buckthorn's vitamin C is more heat tolerant than most berries. Industrial juice production cost about 5 to 11 percent of total ascorbic acid, and pasteurisation at 65, 75 and 85 degrees for the tested durations did not measurably change vitamin C content.2 So a brand telling you that any heat destroys the berry is overselling.

The real losses are elsewhere. Concentration cost around 50 percent of total ascorbic acid.2 And thermally pasteurised juice lost roughly 86 percent of its vitamin C across three months of refrigerated storage.3 Concentration and shelf time, not the heat step, are what hollow out a product.

Which format, for which buyer

There is no single right answer here, only a right match. What there is no excuse for is a product being sold as one format while behaving like another.

The price question, answered honestly

Good sea buckthorn is expensive, and the reason is structural rather than commercial.

The berries sit packed against the stem between long thorns and do not release cleanly when ripe, so they cannot be hand picked at scale. The working method across the growing regions is to cut branches, freeze them and shake the fruit off, which means the plant surrenders part of itself every harvest and needs years to recover. Add remote wild growing regions with no mechanised orchard model, and there is a hard ceiling on supply.

So a high price does not prove quality, but a low price on a product claiming whole wild berry is genuinely informative. Something in that supply chain was substituted, diluted or cultivated, and the ingredient list will usually show you which. What this guide will not do is reframe price per day or per serving to make a number feel smaller. The price is the price.

How do I read a sea buckthorn label?

What disqualifies a sea buckthorn product?

Is a higher price a sign of better sea buckthorn?

Not by itself, but a suspiciously low price is informative. Sea buckthorn cannot be hand picked at scale, because the berries do not release from the thorned branch, so branches are cut, frozen and shaken. That cost is structural. A cheap whole berry product usually is not one.

Should I buy sea buckthorn oil, juice or puree?

Depends what you want. Oil gives you one fatty acid fraction and no water soluble compounds. Juice gives you the water soluble fraction and some of the pulp oil. Puree keeps both together, which is the only form that is the whole fruit rather than part of it.

What does cold pressed actually mean here?

That the fruit was pressed without added heat. It matters less than most brands claim and more than sceptics allow. Published work found sea buckthorn vitamin C relatively stable through pasteurisation, but concentrating juice cost about 50 percent of total ascorbic acid, and pasteurised juice lost about 86 percent over three months chilled.

Does organic certification matter for sea buckthorn?

Less than for supermarket berries, because most sea buckthorn worth buying is wild harvested and therefore not part of a commercial spray programme in the first place. Certification of a wild harvest is a paperwork question about the collection area rather than about farming practice.

How much sea buckthorn should I take?

It is a food, so there is no dose. Human Renaissance's format is a 30 mL pouch, one a day, which is how the 201 mg vitamin C figure on the label is expressed. Anything selling you a precise milligram protocol is selling you a supplement, not a fruit.

Why does good sea buckthorn taste so sour?

Because the acid load is part of the fruit. Sea buckthorn is sharply sour and slightly astringent by nature. A sea buckthorn product that tastes pleasant on its own has almost certainly been sweetened or diluted, and the ingredient list will say which.
