Why Your Skin Feels Dry and Rough No Matter What Cream You Use

Why skin stays dry and rough no matter the cream: the stratum-corneum lipid barrier explained, and what the research on oils actually shows and does not.

You do everything you are told to do. You moisturise after the shower, you have a decent cream, maybe two, and still your skin feels tight by mid-morning, rough on the shins and the backs of the hands, and flaky in the places that catch the wind. You put on more cream and the tightness comes back an hour later. It is easy to conclude the cream is not good enough and to keep buying a better one. Before you do that again, it is worth understanding why skin gets dry in the first place, because the answer sits underneath the layer a cream can reach, and it changes how you think about the whole problem.

What is the skin barrier actually made of?

The outermost layer of your skin, the part you can touch, is called the stratum corneum, and it is often described as a brick wall. The bricks are flattened, dead skin cells called corneocytes, packed tight. The mortar between them is a mix of lipids, fatty molecules, and this is where dryness is decided. That lipid mortar is made mainly of three things in a careful ratio: ceramides, free fatty acids, and cholesterol. Together they form organised sheets that seal the gaps between the bricks.

The job of that sealed wall is to hold water in. Your body is mostly water, the air around you is usually drier than your tissues, so water constantly tries to escape outward through the skin. The rate at which it escapes has a name that tells you everything: transepidermal water loss, the amount of water passing out through the skin per unit time. A healthy lipid mortar keeps that loss low. A depleted one lets water out faster than the deeper skin can replace it, and the surface dries, tightens and flakes.

Why does a cream on top not fix a mortar problem underneath?

This is the crux, and it explains the frustration. Most everyday moisturisers work in two ways. Some are humectants, which draw water into the surface, and some are occlusives, which lay a film on top to slow evaporation for a while. Both help in the moment. Neither rebuilds the lipid mortar between your skin cells, because that mortar is manufactured by the living cells below and organised into sheets as the cells move up and flatten. If the mortar is thin or disordered, a film sitting on the surface reduces the water loss temporarily, but the underlying wall is still leaky, so the tight feeling returns as the film wears off. You are treating the symptom on top of a structural problem beneath, which is exactly why the relief never lasts and why you keep reaching for more.

What tends to matter for dry skin over time is barrier care: gentler washing that does not strip the lipids, not over-hot water, humidity in very dry air, and repairing rather than degreasing the surface. The lipids themselves, the ceramides and fatty acids, are why barrier-repair skincare is built around lipid ingredients rather than water alone.

What has the published research examined about oils and skin?

Because the barrier is built from fatty acids, plant oils and their fatty-acid profiles have been studied for skin. Sea buckthorn, also spelled seabuckthorn, appears in that literature, because its oil is unusually rich in certain fatty acids. Here the honest account has to be careful in two directions at once: the composition work is real, and the oral human evidence for eating your way to better skin is thin. Both halves are true, and a responsible article states both.

Read those three together and the shape is plain. The composition reviews describe sea buckthorn oil's fatty acids and their described role in the barrier, and most of that work is about oil applied to skin or studied as an ingredient, not about eating a berry. The Cochrane review is the discipline: when researchers pooled the trials of oral products taken by mouth for eczema, they found no convincing evidence of benefit. So the honest summary is that robust oral human-trial evidence for eating anything to fix dry skin is limited, and one of the better systematic reviews in an adjacent area came back null. Sea buckthorn enters this article as an oil whose fatty-acid composition has been studied for skin, with no promise attached, and I am not attaching one.

What actually helps dry, rough skin?

The measures with the least to argue about are structural, not miraculous. Wash more gently and less hot, so you are not stripping the lipid mortar you are trying to keep. Use a barrier-supporting moisturiser, ideally one built around lipids, soon after washing while the skin is still damp. Add humidity to very dry indoor air. And if the skin is itchy, inflamed, cracking or not settling, see a clinician, because that is no longer simple cosmetic dryness and self-treating it from a shelf is the wrong move.

Sea buckthorn is relevant to this article only because sea buckthorn oil has appeared in skin-composition literature. That literature does not show that eating a whole-berry puree changes dry skin.
