What makes the world's best sea buckthorn
Most sea buckthorn on the market is a fraction of a berry sold as the berry. Five standards separate the real thing from the rest, every one of them checkable on the package before you pay for it. Here they are, and here is where we stand on each.
This article states an opinion about what a good sea buckthorn product looks like, and it says so plainly. Every number in it is either from published research, linked below, or from our own published nutrition label. Opinions are ours. Numbers are checkable.
The short answer
Five standards, in order of how much they matter: whole berry rather than an isolated fraction, cold pressed rather than heat processed and concentrated, wild rather than cultivated, one ingredient rather than a blend, and a published label rather than a marketing claim. A product that fails the first one cannot be rescued by the other four.

Why this needs saying at all
Sea buckthorn is having a moment, and the moment is producing a lot of products that share a name with the berry and very little else. Softgels of one pressed oil. Gummies with three percent juice. Powders cut with maltodextrin. Blends where sea buckthorn is the fifth ingredient and the first one on the front of the box.
None of that is illegal and most of it is not even dishonest by the letter of the label. It is simply a different product from the fruit, sold using the fruit's reputation. So the useful thing is not an argument about who is best. It is a set of tests any shopper can apply.
Turn the package around. If the ingredient list says anything other than sea buckthorn, you are not buying the berry. You are buying a processed version of part of it.
Standard one: the whole berry, not a fraction
This is the one that decides everything else, and it rests on a fact about the fruit that most buyers do not know. Sea buckthorn does not have one oil. It has two, in different tissues, with different chemistry, plus a water soluble fraction that neither oil carries.
Gas chromatography profiling of the developing berry found palmitoleic acid, the omega 7, at 32 to 43 percent of the pulp oil, while the seed oil separately carried linoleic acid, the omega 6, at 33 to 36 percent and alpha linolenic acid, the omega 3, at 30 to 36 percent.1 Two oils. Two profiles. And the vitamin C, the flavonoids and the phenolic acids sit in neither of them, because they are water soluble.
Which means a sea buckthorn oil capsule is, structurally, one third of a berry. Not a concentrated berry. A fraction. That is a legitimate product if it is described as one, and it is a misleading one if the packaging shows whole orange fruit and says sea buckthorn.

What each form of the berry actually contains

There is a second reason to prefer the whole fruit, and it is one the research is careful about. Carr and Vissers, reviewing whether synthetic and food derived vitamin C are equally bioavailable, concluded that they are, and still wrote that "ingesting vitamin C as part of a whole food is considered preferable because of the concomitant consumption of numerous other macro and micronutrients and phytochemicals."2 That is a careful sentence and it is worth quoting exactly, because it does not say isolates do not work. It says the food comes with company.
Standard two: cold pressed, and not concentrated
The heat question is more nuanced than most brands admit in either direction, so here is the actual evidence.
Sea buckthorn's vitamin C is genuinely more heat tolerant than that of many berries. Research on industrial sea buckthorn juice production found technological processing cost about 5 to 11 percent of total ascorbic acid, and pasteurisation at 65, 75 and 85 degrees did not measurably change vitamin C content across the tested durations.3 So a brand claiming that any heat destroys everything is overstating it.
The damage happens in two other places. Producing concentrated juice caused around 50 percent depletion of total ascorbic acid.3 And thermally pasteurised sea buckthorn juice lost roughly 86 percent of its vitamin C over three months of refrigerated storage.4 Concentration and time, not the heat step alone, are what empty the fruit out.

The practical standard that falls out of this is specific rather than slogan shaped. Cold pressed, not concentrated, sealed with the air pushed out, and eaten within a sensible window. A concentrate is where the number on the front of the pack and the contents of the pouch part company.
Standard three: wild, on hard ground
Wild is the most abused word in this category, so here is the version of it that can be defended.
Plants build defensive chemistry in response to stress. Ultraviolet exposure, cold, drought, poor soil and short seasons all push a plant to make more of the phenolics, flavonoids and carotenoids that we then value in the fruit. This is measurable rather than poetic: a study of wild and cultivated Vaccinium along altitudinal gradients in the Alps found anthocyanin profiles shifting with altitude.5 Same genus, easier ground, less chemistry.
Wild also settles the residue question without needing a certificate. None of the wild berries discussed across this series appears on the Environmental Working Group's Dirty Dozen, the annual ranking built on United States Department of Agriculture Pesticide Data Program testing, largely because they are not grown under intensive commercial spray programmes.6 That is covered in full in why your berries are sprayed.

Standard four: one ingredient
This one takes four seconds in a shop and eliminates most of the category.
Turn the package around and read the ingredient list. For a whole berry product the list should be one word long. Anything else, gums, flavours, sweeteners, added synthetic vitamins, apple or grape juice concentrate carrying the flavour, water sitting first in the list, tells you what you are actually paying for.
The reason this test works so well is that sea buckthorn is unpleasantly sour. Any product that tastes agreeable on its own has almost certainly had something done to it, and the label will say what. A product that is honest about the sourness is usually honest about the rest.
Standard five: a published label
The last standard is the one that makes the other four checkable. Numbers on a website are marketing. Numbers on a published nutrition label are a commitment.
It is also where most superlatives in this category quietly fail. A brand can say "the highest vitamin C of any berry" without ever printing a milligram figure. It can say "rich in omega 7" without saying which oil fraction, or how much. The fix is not more adjectives. It is a label with figures on it and a willingness to be held to them.

What makes one sea buckthorn product better than another?
Five things, in order: whether it is the whole berry or an isolated fraction, whether it was cold pressed or heat processed, whether the fruit was wild or cultivated, whether the ingredient list is one line or many, and whether the brand publishes a real nutrition label with numbers you can check.
Is sea buckthorn oil better than sea buckthorn puree?
They are different products. Oil is one fraction of the fruit, separated from either the pulp or the seed, and it carries none of the water soluble compounds such as vitamin C and flavonoids. Puree keeps the water soluble and oil soluble parts of the berry together. If you want the berry, buy the berry.
Does heat destroy sea buckthorn's nutrients?
It depends on what and how much. Research on sea buckthorn juice found vitamin C relatively stable through pasteurisation compared with berries such as strawberry, but concentrating the juice caused about 50 percent depletion of total ascorbic acid, and heat pasteurised juice lost roughly 86 percent of its vitamin C over three months of refrigerated storage. Concentration and time do more damage than the heat step alone.
Is wild sea buckthorn better than cultivated?
For compound density, generally yes. Plants build defensive chemistry in response to stress, and that chemistry is most of what we value in a berry. Anthocyanin content in wild Vaccinium rises with altitude along measured gradients. Wild also means no commercial spray programme, which is why wild berries do not appear on residue rankings.
What should a sea buckthorn ingredient list say?
Sea buckthorn. That is the whole list for a whole berry product. Gums, flavours, sweeteners, added synthetic vitamins, juice concentrates from other fruit and water high on the list all mean you are buying something other than the berry.
Why is good sea buckthorn expensive?
Because it cannot be harvested cheaply. The berries do not release from the thorned branch when ripe, so the commercial method is cutting branches, freezing them and shaking the fruit off, which costs the plant part of itself every season. Add remote high altitude growing regions and no mechanised orchard model and the cost is structural, not a margin decision.
