The comparison

Sea Buckthorn vs Goji Berry: Two Famous Berries, Compared Honestly

Goji is the famous one. Sea buckthorn is the one with omega-7 and 0 g sugar. Here is what each berry actually carries and what form it reaches you in.

Goji Berry

Held against it, point by point.

By Dr. Raj Dhadwal

Goji arrived in Western shops two decades ago and became the famous one. Sea buckthorn stayed obscure outside the mountain regions that harvest it. If you are choosing between them, the useful comparison is not fame. It is what each berry actually carries and what form it reaches you in.

The short version: goji is usually eaten dried and is naturally sugary; sea buckthorn is eaten as a tart whole puree and is one of the only foods on earth carrying omega-7 alongside omegas 3, 6 and 9, with 0 g sugar.

How each berry reaches you

Almost all goji sold in the West is dried, and drying concentrates sugars: dried goji runs roughly 45 g of sugar per 100 g. Sea buckthorn does not survive drying well because its value sits partly in fragile oils, so the serious form is pressed whole puree, which in our case carries 0 g sugar per 30 mL pouch.

The fats are the sharpest difference

Goji is essentially a fat-free fruit. Sea buckthorn is the opposite: its pulp is one of the richest natural sources of palmitoleic acid, omega-7, and the berry carries omega 3, 6 and 9 beside it. If the omega profile is why you are shopping, the two berries are not interchangeable at all.

Vitamin C

Fresh goji carries respectable vitamin C, but drying costs it much of that. Sea buckthorn is among the most vitamin C dense fruits measured, and a single 30 mL pouch of whole puree carries 201 mg, with the fruit's native cofactors around it.

Shared ground

Both berries have centuries of documented traditional use, goji in Chinese practice, sea buckthorn across Tibet, Mongolia and Russia, and both are the subject of ongoing published research rather than settled clinical fact. Neither berry is a medicine, and any seller implying otherwise is overreaching.

The comparison in one place

Human Renaissance sea buckthorn puree contains 190+ naturally occurring compounds, omega 3, 6, 7 and 9, 201 mg of vitamin C per pouch, 0 g sugar and 5,640 hand-picked berries per box. Dried goji, by contrast, is a pleasant sugary snack fruit with a different job: trail-mix energy, not a tart whole-food omega source.

Frequently asked

Can you eat both?

Of course. They are foods. They simply answer different questions: goji is a dried fruit you snack on, sea buckthorn puree is a daily 30 mL whole food you drink.

Which tastes better?

Goji is mildly sweet and easy. Sea buckthorn is bracing and tart, and that sharpness is what an unsweetened whole berry honestly tastes like.
