Why Is Sea Buckthorn So Expensive? The Honest Cost Breakdown
Wild mountain harvest, thorns that force hand-picking, a short season and cold-chain pressing. The real reasons whole-berry sea buckthorn costs what it costs.
By Dr. Raj Dhadwal
It is a fair question, and shoppers ask it about sea buckthorn more than almost any other berry product: why does this cost several times what a bag of frozen blueberries costs? The answer is not branding. It is the plant itself, and where it grows.
Sea buckthorn is expensive because it grows wild in hard places, defends itself with dense thorns that force hand-harvesting, ripens in a short window, and yields far less usable fruit per plant than farmed berries.
It grows where farming does not reach
The sea buckthorn in our puree is wild-harvested on the Tibetan Plateau and in Inner Mongolia, above 3,000 metres. There are no irrigated rows and no machinery lanes at that altitude. Every cost of remoteness, from access to transport, sits inside the price of the fruit.
The thorns are not a metaphor
The plant is named for its spines. Mechanical harvesters that strip blueberry bushes clean do not work on a thorned shrub with delicate, easily burst berries. Harvesting is human work, berry by berry. One of our boxes represents 5,640 hand-picked berries.
A short season, then a race
The berries ripen in a narrow window, and a burst berry oxidises quickly. That forces a fast, cold chain from mountain to press. Speed under those conditions is expensive in a way a warehouse of shelf-stable capsules never is.
Whole fruit yields less product than extraction
An oil extractor can stretch a harvest across thousands of capsules by pulling one fraction out of the fruit. A whole-berry puree cannot stretch anything: 30 mL of puree requires the actual berries that fill 30 mL. Choosing the whole food means choosing the least efficient, most honest use of the harvest. What that buys is composition: Human Renaissance sea buckthorn puree contains 190+ naturally occurring compounds, omega 3, 6, 7 and 9, 201 mg of vitamin C per pouch, 0 g sugar and 5,640 hand-picked berries per box.
How to judge whether a sea buckthorn product justifies its price
Turn the package around. If the ingredient list is one ingredient, the price is buying fruit. If it is a list of fillers, gums, flavours and added vitamins, the price is buying processing. That single check does more than any review.
Frequently asked
Is cheap sea buckthorn the same thing?
Read the label. Diluted juices, sweetened blends and extracted fractions are different products at different costs. None of them is the whole pressed berry.
Why not farm it cheaply at low altitude?
Farmed sea buckthorn exists. Wild high-altitude fruit is a different growing environment: thin air, long winters and poor rocky soil, which is precisely the environment the deepest-orange berries come from. You cannot greenhouse a mountain.
