How Many Sea Buckthorn Berries Are in One Pouch?

Every box of Human Renaissance sea buckthorn puree is pressed from 5,640 hand-picked berries. That is the box total, and it is a large enough number that it is worth breaking down into what it actually means for one pouch, one day, and why a whole berry is counted this way at all rather than measured only in millilitres.

One box of Human Renaissance sea buckthorn puree is 60 pouches at 30 mL each, 1,800 mL total, pressed from 5,640 hand-picked berries, which works out to 94 berries in every single pouch.

Where does the 94-berry number come from?

The math is direct division, not an estimate: 5,640 berries per box, divided by 60 pouches per box, equals 94 berries per pouch. Each pouch holds 30 mL of puree, so those 94 berries, pulp, juice and oil together, are what gets pressed down into one 30 mL serving. Sea buckthorn berries are small, typically under a centimetre across, which is part of why it takes dozens of them to fill a single pouch rather than the two or three it might take with a larger fruit.

Why does berry count matter more than millilitres?

A millilitre measurement tells you volume, it does not tell you how much actual fruit is behind it. Sea buckthorn is a small, dense berry, and a compositional analysis of eight populations from different areas of northern Pakistan measured vitamin C at 250 to 333 mg per 100 g of fresh fruit, alongside meaningful potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron content, figures that only make sense in terms of whole fruit mass, not a diluted liquid (Sabir et al., 2005, Journal of Medicinal Food, PMID 16379565, https://doi.org/10.1089/jmf.2005.8.518). Counting berries keeps the number honest to what is actually being pressed: 94 whole berries, not 94 berries' worth of extract diluted with water or carrier oil. That distinction is the reason the label leads with hand-picked berries rather than a percentage or a concentration ratio.

What does hand-picking 94 berries a pouch actually involve?

Sea buckthorn grows on a thorny shrub, wild on the Tibetan Plateau, above 3,000 metres, and in Inner Mongolia, and the berries cluster tightly along the branch, which makes machine harvesting damage the fruit and the plant. The traditional method, still used for the berries in Human Renaissance's puree, is to cut branches when frozen and shake or hand-strip the berries loose, a process that protects both the shrub, which survives to fruit again, and the fragile skin of the berry itself. Ninety-four berries sounds like a lot until you picture that harvest: it is dozens of small orange fruits gathered by hand for every single pouch someone tears open in the morning, sixty times over for one box.

How does that scale across a full box?

Unit Berries Volume
One pouch 94 berries 30 mL
One box (60 pouches, a 2-month supply) 5,640 berries 1,800 mL

That per-box framing is the point rather than a side note. One pouch is a daily serving, but the argument for taking it daily is what 60 days of that serving adds up to: over five and a half thousand berries' worth of vitamin C, carotenoids, flavonoids, amino acids and the omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 fatty acids, delivered a pouch at a time rather than all at once.

Frequently asked

Is 94 berries per pouch an exact count or an average? It is the box math: 5,640 hand-picked berries divided across 60 pouches, based on the harvest weight that fills a 1,800 mL box.

Why not just list millilitres and skip the berry count? Volume alone does not communicate how much actual fruit went into a pouch. The berry count keeps the number tied to real hand-picked fruit rather than a diluted liquid measurement.

Are all 94 berries whole, or is this juice from more berries? The puree is the whole berry, pulp and oil intact, pressed and sealed with nothing added, not a juice extracted from a larger quantity of fruit.

We are not asking anyone to take our word for it. Turn the pouch over and read the label yourself, then decide whether a narrow-spectrum extract or a whole berry pressed into a single-serve pouch fits what you are actually trying to build into your day. See the sea buckthorn puree.
