Omega-7, the fatty acid almost nobody has heard of

Omega 3, 6 and 9 are household names. Omega 7 has almost no food story at all, except for one berry that carries it at levels nothing else in the produce aisle comes close to. Here is what the molecule actually looks like, and why the delivery form matters as much as the fatty acid.

The short answer

Omega 7 is a family of monounsaturated fatty acids named for the position of their first double bond, 7 carbons in from the tail end of the molecule. The main one found in nature is palmitoleic acid, a 16-carbon chain. It is rare in the food supply, and the richest plant source reported in the literature is sea buckthorn pulp oil, where it makes up 32 to 43 percent of the oil.

What "omega 7" actually means

Omega numbers are a shorthand for where a fatty acid's first double bond sits, counted from the tail end of the carbon chain rather than the acid end. That single positional difference is why omega 3, omega 6, omega 7 and omega 9 behave as distinct nutritional stories even though they are all, structurally, close relatives.

A fatty acid is a chain of carbon atoms with a carboxylic acid group at one end and a methyl group at the other. Chemists count two ways: from the acid end (delta numbering) or from the methyl, or omega, end. The omega system counts from the tail, so "omega 7" tells you the first double bond in the chain is 7 carbons in from that tail end. Omega 3 counts to 3, omega 6 counts to 6, omega 9 counts to 9. Same basic shape of molecule, different bond position, different fatty acid.

The main omega 7 fatty acid found in nature is palmitoleic acid, a 16-carbon chain with one double bond in the cis configuration at that seventh position. It is monounsaturated, meaning it carries exactly one double bond, the same category as omega 9's oleic acid, the fatty acid found in olive oil.

That structure is also why omega 7 behaves differently from omega 3 and omega 6 in the body. Omega 3 and omega 6 are both polyunsaturated, meaning they carry two or more double bonds, and the body cannot manufacture them on its own, which is why they are called essential. Omega 7 is monounsaturated and the body can synthesize some itself, similar to omega 9. It is not classified as an essential fatty acid the way omega 3 and 6 are, which is part of why it gets less attention even though it is structurally distinct and nutritionally interesting.

Why almost no food carries it

Fish oil is an omega 3 story. Seed oils are an omega 6 story. Olive oil is an omega 9 story. Omega 7 has no comparable everyday food source, because palmitoleic acid is simply uncommon in the plants and animal fats that make up most diets.

Omega 3, 6 and 9 each have a famous food. Omega 7's closest thing to a famous food grows on a thorned shrub above 3,000 metres.

Whole berry vs oil capsule: why the delivery form matters

Sea buckthorn's fat lives in two separate tissues of the fruit, the pulp and the seed, and each has a different fatty acid profile. Gas chromatography profiling of the developing berry found palmitoleic acid, the omega 7, concentrated in the pulp oil at 32 to 43 percent, while the seed oil carries more linoleic acid, omega 6, and alpha linolenic acid, omega 3.1 An extracted "sea buckthorn oil" capsule is a decision about which of those fractions, or which blend of them, gets pressed out and put in a softgel.

A whole-berry puree does not make that choice. It keeps the fat-soluble fraction, where omega 7 sits, together with the water-soluble fraction, which carries vitamin C and flavonoids and does not survive an oil-pressing process at all. That is the practical difference between eating the fruit and taking an extract of one part of it. Neither is dishonest, but they are different products, and the ingredient list is the fastest way to tell them apart.

Does whole-fruit delivery differ from an oil capsule?

Yes. An oil capsule delivers one extracted fraction of a fruit, usually just the fat-soluble part.
