How to Use Sea Buckthorn Puree: Straight, Stirred or Blended

The first pouch surprises everyone. Four ways people actually drink sea buckthorn puree, and the one rule worth knowing: do not cook it.

The short version

By Dr. Raj Dhadwal

The first pouch surprises almost everyone. Sea buckthorn is a genuinely tart berry, closer to a lemon crossed with a sour apricot than to anything in the sweet-smoothie aisle. So the most common real question from new owners of a box is simple: what do I actually do with this?

Sea buckthorn puree is used four main ways: straight from the pouch, stirred into water or juice, sweetened with a little honey, or blended into yogurt and smoothies.

1. Straight from the pouch

Tear the corner, drink the 30 mL, done. This is how most long-term users end up taking it, because it takes ten seconds and the tartness stops being a shock after the first week. Many people describe coming to crave exactly that sharpness as a wake-up.

2. With fresh orange

Squeeze half an orange into a small glass, add the pouch, stir. Orange rounds the sourness without burying the berry, and the flavours are close cousins. This is the gentlest introduction for anyone who found the first straight pouch too much.

3. With honey

A teaspoon of honey stirred into the puree turns it into something closer to a tart syrup. Worth knowing: the puree itself carries 0 g sugar, so whatever sweetness you add is the only sweetness in the glass, and you control it.

4. Into yogurt, smoothies or oatmeal

The puree folds into plain yogurt the way a fruit compote does, and it survives a blender without complaint. In a smoothie it behaves like a citrus element. Stirred over oatmeal with blueberries it reads as a bright fruit sauce.

What not to do

Do not cook it at high heat. Vitamin C is heat-sensitive, and the point of a cold-pressed whole berry is that nothing was ever heated away. Stir it into things, do not boil it in them.

What you are working with

Human Renaissance sea buckthorn puree contains 190+ naturally occurring compounds, omega 3, 6, 7 and 9, 201 mg of vitamin C per pouch, 0 g sugar and 5,640 hand-picked berries per box.

Frequently asked

Why is it so tart?

Because it is the whole berry with nothing sweetened and nothing masked. Sea buckthorn's natural acidity is part of its character; a sweet sea buckthorn product is telling you sugar was added.

Does mixing it weaken it?

No. Stirring the puree into water, juice or yogurt changes the flavour experience, not the composition. The same 30 mL of berry is in the glass either way.
